Matthew Butterick's Practical Typography remains the best single resource for web typography. His argument that typography is the visual medium of language — not decoration applied to language — is the foundation Remarque builds on.
Notes
The problem with most design systems is that they optimize for the builder, not the reader. A comprehensive component library is a productivity tool for developers. A typographic system is a readability tool for humans. These are different goals with different tradeoffs.
OKLCH is quietly becoming the most important CSS color development in years. Perceptual uniformity means you can adjust lightness or chroma independently and get predictable results. No more manually eyeballing "does this blue look as bright as that green?"
The optimal line length for reading is 45-75 characters per line. At 17px Inter, 46rem produces approximately 70 characters — near the upper end, optimized for technical content with longer words and inline code.
Newsreader by Production Type is an underappreciated typeface for the web. Variable weight, variable optical size, open source. It has the authority of a traditional serif without the heaviness of Georgia or the overuse of Playfair Display.
